Want to know what one of the best things in the world is when you have a chronic illness? It’s being able to unapologetically talk about being sick. It is so refreshing to be able to openly discuss something that is a huge part of your life without trying to find pleasant ways to word it to avoid making others uncomfortable. We should be able to say “I am sick.” Instead we often find ourselves saying “I am sick, but…” so we can provide people with that much needed positive spin at the end of a sentence about our health. It’s like we live in a world where “viewer discretion is advised” should be flashing over our heads any time we mention our disease by name.
If you’re like me and can’t stand sugar-coating your illness and long for some real talk about being sick, then your solution has arrived. It’s called Sickboy Podcast.
Sickboy Podcast is a show for the sick by the sick. It can also be for the healthy too, if you’re one of those cool healthy people who doesn’t start acting all squirrely at the thought of someone mentioning their incurable disease. Sickboy Podcast is Jeremie Saunders, Brian Stever, and Taylor MacGillivary. They are 3 best friends. Jeremie has Cystic Fibrosis, and Brian and Taylor are those non-squirrely healthy people I just spoke of. Because CF plays a big part in their lives these guys don’t see a reason to shy away from sick talk, so they decided to do it more publicly.
Jeremie sent me a teaser of the first episode, which launches September 19th. The verdict? This podcast is so good I want to take it behind a middle school and get it pregnant (and before you text me about this: no mom I’m not being literal, it’s just a quote from 30 Rock). It’s really hard to explain the sort of feeling you get as a sick person listening to a podcast about 3 guys discussing topics as intense as their worst medical scares and what it’s like to get a barium enema all while making jokes about it (and cursing like sailors). When the 10 minute teaser ended all I could think was “Yes, finally. Somebody gets it.”
Sickboy Podcast is attempting to do something we all want to see achieved in the chronic illness community: to make sickness more mainstream and less difficult to talk about as a society. We want to erase that ridiculous stigma that surrounds chronic illness. And I really think that they are onto something here. With their mixture of chronic illness education, witty banter and ability to talk about even the most taboo topics, Sickboy Podcast could really change the game for us. The show isn’t going to be just about Cystic Fibrosis, either. They plan on having guests on the show to talk about all sorts of chronic illnesses (including lupus!). This will be a great platform for our society to see what it’s really like to live with these diseases every day (spoiler alert: it’s not always sad and depressing).
So go to their website where you can preview the podcast, read some meaningful yet hilarious blog posts, and ultimately get more comfortable discussing the ins and outs of sick life (including what it’s like to have “Intestine Inception”). And if you’re a member of the chronic illness community, do us all a favour and share the podcast with your followers!
If you love it as much as I do, you can show your support by donating to their Kickstarter campaign. Just think of how much better life would be if people would just get over it and have an open discussion about chronic illness. If you donate to their campaign you can hold your head high knowing that you helped make the world a less shitty place to be.
